The Rio Chama
ADA Accessibility Notes
The Chama is suitable for people with some disabilities. Please phone to discuss your requirements.
A beautiful multicolored sandstone canyon wilderness with easy Class 3 rapids, perfect for families. We camp in the wilderness, beneath spectacular walls of pink, yellow and orange sandstone, beside flower-strewn meadows, in the shadow of old-growth ponderosa pines. As the river threads through this serene, hidden landscape, you'll see rich bird life, and perhaps beavers, deer, and the other animals that call the Chama their home. At night, as the constellations wheel overhead, you'll dine on delicious food made fresh by our campfire gourmets and listen to music or stories by firelight. Can be done as a two-day trip; a three-day adventure allows time for side hikes, relaxing in the natural hot spring, and visiting fossilized dinosaur footprints.
Relax on a raft and be rowed down the river--or for more excitement, paddle your own funyak. Perfect for first-timers and families, and anyone who wants to get away from it all and enjoy the restorative energies of nature.
Los Rios River Runners will meet you in Taos, Abiquiu, or Espanola, according to your convenience. The put-in for the Chama wilderness is just below El Vado dam.
Best Seasons for Experiencing
