Not an island at all, this popular launch site for float trips on the San Juan River near Bluff is also the location of a large petroglyph panel displaying rock art dated to between 2000 and 800 years ago. The panel presents a comprehensive overview of the rock art found all along the San Juan River and displays a number of images of Kokopelli, the ancient flute player found throughout the Four Corners region. A campground operated by the BLM, picnic area, and boat launch are all found at Sand Island.
