New Mexico Furniture and Art
Mapes moved to Taos from Los Angeles in 1986. Inspired by the outspoken geology, the richness of history and the embracement of creativity, he was instantly rooted to the area. There is no shortage of inspiration in Northern New Mexico, and David takes advantage of this to his fullest capacity. His designs are bold and innovative and his craftsmanship is excellent.
David creates original designs and also builds to order. Among his designs is TaosJazz. This style of furnishings often includes traditional New Mexico tin work, however it is hardly traditional in the way David executes his designs. Often organic in nature, he produces highly tactile reliefs in the metal which represent nature's inspirations. One will see Hollyhocks, Aspen trees, Taos Mountain and other local fauna and architecture. Sometimes he will incorporate colors and metal leaf along with a skillfully applied patina to create a "painting" in metal. David works with all types of wood, as well as materials which are indigenous to the area.
