In 2006, artist Karen Ahlgren and her husband purchased the old mission and began renovation and restoration of this historic building. Each year, Karen opens her studio/gallery to all who attend the Rio Costilla Studio Tour, now in it's 12th year. Visitors are delighted to see the yearly renovations, and marvel at the beauty and spirit of Karens' contemporary wildlife paintings, her wonderful weavings, and semi-precious stone Zen jewelry.
Originally built in the 1850's in the Plaza de los Manzanares in Garcia, Colorado this double-walled adobe mission is currently being restored and is now the studio/gallery of renown artist Karen Ahlgren. Garcia is the oldest settlement in Colorado established with written history dating to 1542, during Coronado's exploration of the southwest. Garcia was settled in 1842, but the first inhabitants were driven off by the Ute indians. Thus the building of Plaza de los Manzanares to help protect the settlers from indian raids.
