Introduction

Born and raised in the high desert in Santa Fe New Mexico. Jon comes from a family rich in history and culture dating back to the 1800’s. Jon is a 9th generation Traditional Spanish Santero-Woodcarver and is great, great grandson of Jose Dolores Lopez and great, great nephew of George Lopez of Cordova, New Mexico.

Full Explanation

Both Jose Dolores and George are well known for their Cordova style woodcarvings and santo’s, they are known as the Image Makers and written about in “The Wood Carvers of Cordova, New Mexico: Social Dimensions of an Artistic “Revival” by Charles L. Briggs.

Jon was taught the family art and traditions by his uncle, Jose Floyd Lucero, godson and great nephew of George Lopez. Jon has been developing an understanding of the art and the family tradition since the 1980′s.  Introduced to the annual Santa Fe Spanish Market in 1988, as a youth participant, Jon had the opportunity to share the experience with his family members who had participated for decades.
