Inscription Rock Trading & Coffee Co.

Inscription Rock Trading & Coffee Co. is a very unique and beautiful Southwestern Trading Post and Coffee Shop, which specializes in quality Zuni and Navajo handcrafted artwork. At the coffee bar and on the outdoor patio beneath the towering Bond Mesa, you will enjoy Organic, Fair Trade, and Kosher coffee, smoothies, espresso, teas, gourmet snacks, ice cream and foods. During the summer months locals, visitors and passersby enjoy the "Music Beneath the Mesa" concert series performed on the outdoor stage by Jonathon Lee Pickens, his son Walker & their friends.  You can listen to Jonathon's music on his website.

Inscription Rock Trading & Coffee Co. sits at the foot of Bond Mesa on Highway 53, also known as the “Ancient Way”. The “Ancient Way” refers to the historic trail that ran from the Zuni Pueblo, across El Malpais (the Badlands) to the Acoma Pueblo. One mile west of Inscription Rock Trading & Coffee Co. is El Morro National Monument (formerly known as Inscription Rock), whose year-round pool of water provided respite for travelers along the trail. These travelers included the ancient Puebloan people, Spanish Conquistadors, early California-bound pioneers, and even the short-lived U.S. Army Camel Corps. As these travelers paused in their respective journeys, they left behind their names as a testament to their passing, carved in the sheer sandstone walls near the pool. From this sandstone bluff and this history came the inspiration for the name of our business, Inscription Rock Trading & Coffee Co.

In 2001, Jon, Pam, and Walker Pickens (while working other jobs) began building their dream, Inscription Rock Trading & Coffee Co.   In their off-hours they hauled logs from the Zuni Mountains for split log stairs and for support columns for the rough- sawn center beam.  Aspen tongue and groove from Dolores, Colorado became the ceiling.  Over 2,000 hand laid bricks became the floor. Upon completion of the building (3 years later) antique cases were moved in to hold the beautiful work of local native American artisans, and indigenous people from around the world. A red antique counter from a Route 66 café became the coffee and espresso bar and eventual meeting place for locals and present day Ancient Way travelers. In 2007, Picken's built an outdoor patio and stage on the east side of the building with the rock outcroppings of Bond Mesa as a visual backdrop for our “Music Beneath the Mesa” performances during the summer.

"Our vision is to carry quality Native American arts and crafts and to give our customers a real connection to the artists and their ancient traditions. From our early childhood experiences growing up in the West and Southwest, we feel an obligation to honestly represent the area and its Original People.  If you have visited us at our store, thank you for stopping by, and come back again soon. If we have yet to meet you, we look forward to introducing you to this special place, its artisans, and to sharing a cup of fine coffee with you."  ~ Pam, Jon & Walker Pickens

Inscription Rock Trading & Coffee Co. is located 1 mile east of El Morro National Monument on Highway 53 at mile marker 46 in the northwest corner of New Mexico.
