High Feather Ranch

Bed and Breakfast Style

The 4600 square foot Ranch House was built in 2001 specifically as a B&B. Enjoy plenty of outdoor living with an additional 2200 square feet of covered portals and private patios. A Feng Shui practitioner participated in the design and building stages in order to balance life force energy. Using "green building" techniques throughout, the Innkeeper selected straw bale for it's natural origins as well as the insulation and "outsulation" properties. Using massive oak timbers and siding reclaimed from an 1860's era Tennessee tobacco barn, along with the straw bales which are from barley grown in Colorado for Coors beer, standing dead spruce Viga posts and beams from the Jicarilla Apache Reservation along with antique mesquite doors, gates and a mantle piece from Mexico saved over 16,000 board feet of newly milled lumber. The massive handhewn beams, vigas, and antique doors and gates lend to the rustic elegance of the Ranch House. Fourteen foot high ceilings in the Great Room and Dining Room are accented by up lighting and accent lighting that makes the warm wood colors literally glow. The beauty of hand troweled plaster walls, brick floors, wide bancos and expansive views along with the aroma of piƱon wood burning in the fireplace in the Great Room is true Southwest Style.

Eco-Friendly Notes

From these humble materials you have a home that is warm in winter and cool in summer. It has a gently organic, sculpted quality. Every window and door opening is smooth and hand-rounded. Walls are not quite plane and their modest undulations give them a fluid grace in spite of their great thickness and bulk. The Ranch house belongs to the landscape as truly as the tan dirt of the High Desert, the chromatic skies and the rugged peaks that surround it. All of the guest rooms have gorgeous mountain and High Desert views, private bathroom with hand tiled slate shower and floor and hand-crafted soaps, whirlpool or soaking tub, fireplace and private patio . Every guest room has a seating and reading area and is furnished with antiques and unique art, King bed, and down pillows and comforter.

Locally or Family Owned Business Notes

The Christmas of '82, that is 1882, in a New Mexico gold mining town, was described this way. "The girls were looking their best, the music was enough to make a dead man dance, and the old sourdoughs and desert rats were making up for a year of hard and lonely work. It seemed at times as if the floor must surely fall in under the lively dancing. Everyone had been told to leave firearms at home, an order which was carried out for once. It is safe to say that no one present was inclined to put any slight on the hospitality. The company was in high feather."

In the last month of the last year of the 20th Century, from this description of life in New Mexico a hundred years prior, High Feather Ranch was born on 130 private acres on a High Desert mesa at the foothills of the Ortiz mountains overlooking the Sangre de Cristo and Jemez ranges slightly south of Santa Fe.
