Take a rest from driving and pull into this scenic picnic area nestled between the fresh looking McCartys lava flow and the much older Mesozoic sandstone cliffs. Select from four covered picnic tables, or walk away from the road and picnic in nature. Stay vigilant for the many cactus and the seldom seen rattlesnake. Kids will enjoy the shallow caves and stone labyrinths, while under the watchful eye of parents. Plot the path of the sun and you might find a large Ponderosa Pine that shades your car most of the day. Wander on the first part of the Narrows Rim Trail. There are two vault toilets on either end of the loop drive. This area is closed to camping and overnight parking.
