Durango, Colorado, was founded in 1879 by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway. The railroad to Silverton soon followed in 1881, and in the summer of 1882, the route was completed and opened. Originally, it was built to carry silver and gold ore from the San Juan Mountains, but it didn't take long for the true treasure of the San Juan Mountains to be discovered: the scenic views. These are the same views available to passengers today. This historic train has been in continuous operation for 128 years, and the passenger cars are still pulled behind vintage steam locomotives that are authentic to the line. A ride on this historic train also brings alive the sights and sounds of days gone by, including its station in the charming, mountain city of Durango and its mining town destination of Silverton.
