Butler Wash Ancestral Puebloan Cliff Dwellings

Accessed directly off The Trail of the Ancients National Scenic Byway, a paved parking area which accommodates motor homes and large vehicles, and pit toilet facilities are available. A short, marked hiking trail winds across small washes and over slickrock before reaching an overlook of a cliff dwelling one half mile across the canyon. Interpretive signing is located at the overlook. Walk south off the overlook to view a natural bridge up the canyon.  Round-trip hiking distance is one mile and travel time is approximately half an hour on an easy-to-moderate difficulty hike.  Interpretive brochures are available at the trailhead at the parking area.  The site is managed by the Bureau of Land Management, Monticello Field Office.

Pet Friendly Notes

Pets are permited on the trail but visitors are asked to clean up after them in order to insure a positive experience for those following them. Pets are not regulated but 100+ degrees Farenheit in summer months and ice falls and below freezing temperature in the winter preclude safely allowing pets to run free in the canyon.  Care is recommended if traveling with pets.  Carry enough water for your pet at all times during the year.
